Chair-Elect

Karen Ward, ACUME, CGEA
Medical Education Program Administrator
University of Virginia School of Medicine

To be nominated to serve as Chair -Elect on CDIM Clerkship Administrators Advisory Council is a tremendous honor.

My involvement with CDIM membership for the past 11 years has yielded great opportunities professionally and personally.  Serving on the CDIM Professional Development Committee since 2013 has given me the opportunity to reflect on my own career and personal goals here at UVA.  It has been a pleasure working with a wonderful group of Administrators from all over and creating a bond and developing education for all Administrators.   Serving on the CDIM CA Advisory Council has given me a broader knowledge of how important it is to advocate for all Clerkship Administrators.  I am very committed to and passionate about supporting medical student education and continuously strive to improve the education experience for the medical students and Administrators.

It is my goal to advocate on behalf of and be an active resource for new and seasoned administrators.  I plan to share my views on the important role we undertake in facilitating the education of our medical students, and guide other Administrators in their quest to be recognized by their institutions. During this time we need to bring all the Administrators together as much as possible. Being the Chair-Elect will give me the opportunity to further encourage professional development with such an inspiring group of administrators.

Thank you for your consideration,

Councilor

Using my past and present experiences allow me to problem solve, critically think, and to collaborate with my peers. I am able to easily adapt to whatever situation comes my way; for example, on one day, I was able to correct a systematic error with an exam so the students could take an exam; reschedule a specialty topic discussion for later in the day and lastly rearrange the schedule so that all students could perform a COMA patient exam with the Clerkship Director. I work to develop process improvements to facilitate a fund raiser to the Teenage Strivers Ministry which I am passionate about, as well as the timing of elective evaluations to avoid late due dates for over 75 3rd and 4th year students. Using these qualities will allow collaboration with the other council members on important topics that are addressed. My future goals are to have a leadership position in the medical education realm to enhance the skills I currently have as well as grow new skills to be able to help the students and other personnel reach their full potential. In addition, become active in different organizations, such as the AAIM and CDIM to make a difference and help the organization to become better.

My vision for the council is to align with AAIM’s vision as it pertains to medical education and research as well as having the CDIM CA work parallel to the clerkship directors in addition to the program directors as it relates to research, resources, and education. I will represent some of the diverse range of perspectives within the Alliance, such as seeking out resources to assist those with diverse backgrounds or with diseases that are not as prevalent in certain areas to work collaboratively together. An example, the residents needed to be educated more on sickle cell disease to assist the patients as well as give the medical students insight. I was able to get in touch with someone that is familiar with sickle cell disease and have them setup a meeting and give a presentation to the residents to provide the knowledge and education needed. This was approved by the internal medicine clerkship director, chief and program director.
