How long have you been a member of AAIM?

I Joined AAIM in December 2009. I joined it after I was appointed as core faculty.

Describe your typical day.

Program directors have jobs and responsibilities that change with seasons. However, for any given week a typical day depends on the type of responsibilities I have during that week. Some days, I have purely administrative responsibilities for the program and the hospitalist group; other days involve a combination of administrative responsibilities and direct patient care. 

What is your favorite part of the job?

They are many parts of my job that I enjoy. One of them is working side by side with residents as a team on QI projects and innovations. Another one is working with my associate program director. The best thing about both these meetings is that I learn something new from each of them every time. 

How has the AAIM membership been of value to you and your career?

AAIM is single most important factor in my career growth. I cannot imagine any residency faculty or director that can function optimally without this organization. AAIM meetings are where you can learn about great innovations and ways to implement them. Workshops are my favorite part of those meetings. I have applied knowledge from workshops directly to my program with help of my faculty and residents. I presented in one workshop at the 2017 spring meeting as well. I am a member of the AAIM Education Committee. In this committee, I work with extremely talented colleagues and learn so much by interacting with them.

What's your favorite moment of your career so far?

I worked as a lead program director for the med-peds department for three years from 2013 to 2016. Working with my pediatrics co-program director, med-peds faculty, and residents was an honor for me. We worked as one team. I learned administrative skills in that role that I can apply today with a brilliant group of faculty and residents on the internal medicine side. 

What was your childhood dream job

In my early childhood, I wanted to be a truck driver. During middle school years, I wanted to be a commercial pilot. I had never thought about becoming a doctor in my childhood. 

How do you spend your free time?

I have three kids 12, 11, and 9 years old. My wife, kids, and I love to travel and take long road trips whenever we can. I like running and do it on a regular basis. We live in a small city in Central Wisconsin and engage in community events. I love to buy vegetables from our farmers market. 

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

My colleagues and residents know about this already. However, others are often surprised that I wake up early on my workdays and walk and run to complete 10,000 steps before starting my day. Weekends and off days are exceptions.
