Fellowship Application Season 2021-2022

AAIM Provides Guidance for 2021-2022 Fellowship Application Season

In the interests of protecting the health and safety of applicants and programs as well as striving to create an equitable application process for fellowship applicants for the 2021-2022 season, the Alliance developed recommendations to guide the internal medicine education community, specifically fellowship applicants, faculty advisors, residency programs, and fellowship directors, during the upcoming fellowship interview season.

  • AAIM strongly recommends fellowship programs conduct virtual interviews for all applicants, to include learners at their own institution.
  • AAIM strongly recommends against open houses or in-person single/group visits to reduce bias and maintain safety of trainees and communities.
  • AAIM advocates simulating the in-person interview day as much as possible.
  • AAIM encourages programs to share resources, tools, and best practices for virtual interviewing with the broader medical education community.

The Alliance thanks the cross-council work group that developed the guidelines: Jillian Catalanotti, MD; Dominique L. Cosco, MD; Solomon Liao, MD, FAAHPM; Vera P. Luther, MD; Valerie O; Debra L. Simmons, MD, MS, FACE, FACP; Abby L. Spencer, MD, MS, FACP; and Patricia Vassallo, MD, FACC, FASE (Chair).

AAIM acknowledges that there are no perfect resolutions, and no process will address all stakeholder preferences. These consensus recommendations best represent the professional values of the internal medicine community and provides guidance based on information available as of May 2021.
